PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This project, funded through New York State Office of Mental Health, began admitting clients in May 2001.  Five to eight beds (out of 36) at Fairview’s Community Residences and six beds (out of 40) in the Supportive Living program are designated for dually-diagnosed clients.

PURPOSE: The MICA Enhanced Residential Services program provides community residential and supportive living levels of care for alcoholic and chemically dependent men and women. The primary purpose of this program is to bridge the gap between higher levels of care to safe housing options and case management in order to promote sober independent living.

GOALS: The principal goal of the Program is to provide a living environment that will enhance the recovery process.

The following is a list of the major objectives of this program:

  • Maintain and sustain abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. Coordinate linkage to treatment program, recovery support system (AA/NA), and other community services (i.e. health, mental health, legal, etc.);
  • Acquire and practice appropriate social and living skills (i.e. appearance and grooming, personal hygiene, communication skills, problem solving, etc.);
  • Engage in and maintain a program of educational/vocational training, volunteer work, and/or employment;
  • Learn and engage in sober recreational activities;
  • Develop healthy community ties.

TARGET POPULATION: All persons admitted to the MICA Enhanced Residential Services are dually diagnosed with alcoholism and/or chemical dependence and co-occurring mental illness.  Participants are required to have an understanding of their addiction, mental health needs and a commitment to recovery. The following is a list of the primary admission criteria:

  • Inability to abstain from alcohol and/or other drugs outside of a supportive environment;

  • A mental health diagnosis;
  • Need for the level of care being offered;
  • An alternative setting is impractical or has been unsuccessful.

LENGTH OF STAY: Residents of the Community Residence typically stay 3-6 months.  Residents of the Supportive Living Program, Mannion House, typically stay  6-24 months.

CAPACITY: Five to eight beds in the Community Residence and six beds in the Mannion House facility.
